Where is Nerja?
Nerja is right next to the seashore about 50 kilometres from Málaga on the N340 coastal highway, and is the eastern tip of Málaga's Costa del Sol. Initially a small fishing village, the town now has a population of over 12,000.
Nerja has 16 kilometres of beaches with fine sand and clear blue water. Most water sports are available here, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing.
Alongside a dramatic mountain range (Sierra Almijara) to the east, the town has managed to avoid being destroyed by the concrete high-rise scenario that has been the result of the tourist industry in some of the other coastal resorts.
The heart of Nerja is the Balcón de Europa (Balcony of Europe) a spectacular promenade along the edge of a towering cliff. Similar to a lot of the Mediterranean - once populated by the moors, this site is of a great Moorish castle, with panoramic views of the Mediterranean, against an inspiring backdrop of hazy blue mountains.
